APL to support Lord Ahmed for Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s fair trial

LONDON : The UK-based Association of Pakistani origin Lawyers (APL) has announced its complete support to the campaign initiated by British parliamentarian Lord Nazir Ahmed to seek a fair trial of Dr.Aafia Siddiqui. APL Chair Barrister Amjad Malik, said Tuesday that western media has blacked out Dr.Siddiqui’s conviction and reactions including reservations on trial which shows that it is always ready to rub under the carpet some of the worst human rights abuses when it comes to their national interest.

He confirmed that APL appreciates Lord Ahmed’s stance on Dr.  Siddiqui’s case and that the Association will support any drive Lord Ahmed initiates to campaign, and seek fair trial for Dr. Siddiqui.

He said it is strange that neuroscientist was first labelled as No.7 on the wanted list of Al-Qaeda and later was charged and tried for minor criminal offences and she never had the opportunity to wipe the stigma attached to her name being associated with the outfit which in itself is a criminal offence.

The Bizarre Terror Conviction of Pakistani Scientist Aafia Siddiqui, And Why There’s a Good Chance She’s Innocent

JUAN GONZALEZ: We begin today with one of the most baffling cases in the so-called war on terror, the story of thirty-seven-year-old Aafia Siddiqui.

On Wednesday, a New York court convicted the American-educated Pakistani neuroscientist of attempted murder for shooting at US soldiers and FBI agents while detained in Afghanistan in 2008.

Back in 2003, Aafia Siddiqui was wanted by law enforcement and the FBI and suspected of links to al-Qaeda leadership. But the MIT-trained scientist had mysteriously disappeared along with her three children, two of whom are U.S. citizens. She reappeared five years later in Afghanistan with her oldest son and was arrested on suspicion of carrying chemicals and notes referring to “mass-casualty attacks” in New York.

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

“I want you to come to know of the concern and dedication that this woman had for Islam as described by those who knew her – a dedication that was manifested by way of actions that were very simple and easy, yet seldom carried out by those who are able.”

“She is a high security risk.”

- Christopher LaVigne, assistant US attorney, on August 11th when trying to convince a judge to prevent Aafia from seeing a doctor for her gunshot wound.

How a “Nice American Girl” Became a Jihadist: Dr. Siddiqui Found Guilty

She studied at MIT and at Brandeis where she received a Ph.D in Neuroscience. Thus, she was both an educated and in some sense, a westernized woman. Both her Pakistani-born father and Pakistani husband are physicians who trained in the West, in England and America, respectively; her brother and sister are also highly trained professionals. Nevertheless, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui learned to hate America, hate Jews, and hate Israel right here in liberal America.
