Islamabad has appealed to Washington to repatriate the female Pakistani scientist convicted in a US court of attempting to murder US military interrogators and FBI agents.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was recently found guilty by a US jury of charges that she has vehemently denied to have committed. The main charge against her was using a US warrant officer’s M-4 rifle while being interrogated in 2008 for an alleged possession of ‘documents detailing a ‘terrorist’ plan.’

“Pakistan would provide her legal assistance as the case passes through subsequent stages in the judicial system, the US government may look at the possibility of her repatriation to Pakistan under the Prisoner Exchange Agreement,” said Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari to the visiting US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke in Islamabad, a Press TV correspondent reported late Thursday.

Siddiqui vanished in Karachi, Pakistan with her three children on March 30, 2003. US officials allege that she was seized on July 17, 2008 by Afghan security forces in the Ghazni Province while in possession of documents, including formulas for explosives and chemical weapons.

Human rights groups allege that Siddiqui had been secretly held and tortured at the infamous US base in Bagram, north of Kabul, for five years prior to the alleged 2008 shooting.

In the final stages of her trial in the Manhattan Federal Court, Siddiqui’s lawyer Linda Moreno also argued that “there is no physical evidence that an M-4 rifle was touched by Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, let alone fired.”

Siddiqui’s case has been very controversial since most of the evidence against her are circumstantial and based on US intelligence and military agents in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The harsh treatment of the US-educated scientist and her five-year secret detention and shooting has provoked an outrage in the Muslim world, especially her native country of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD – After directions of President Asif Ali Zardari and growing criticism of the masses, the Foreign Office is said to have evolved a new strategy to pursue Dr. Aafia’s case again, it is learnt reliably.

As part of the new strategy, the authorities have decided to hire another law firm to defend Afia Siddiqui while President Zardari has already assured of his support including financial aid enough to meet expenses of, once again, Afia’s case.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Government has already spent one million US dollar from taxpayer’s money to hire three lawyers who completely failed to defend Afia. Interestingly, these legal experts were picked by the Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Hussein Haqqani, who, according to many in the country, also failed to get support from Obama administration in the case.

Dr. Aafia may have to spend whole of her remaining life in an American jail following the controversial decision of the American court that found her guilty.

According to diplomatic sources, Afia’s family intends to challenge Afghan police’s report that was considered by the US court as a base to adjudge Afia guilty.

The human rights organizations and the legal experts have also expressed their concern over the authenticity of the Afghan police’s report.

According to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court that on July 17, 2008, officers of the Afghanistan National Police (ANP) observed Siddiqui outside the Ghazni governor’s compound. The ANP officers questioned Siddiqui, considering her as suspicious, and searched her handbag. In it, report said, they found numerous documents describing the creation of explosives, as well as excerpts from the anarchist’s arsenal.

The police’s report stated that Siddiqui’s papers included descriptions of various landmarks in the US, including in the New York City. Siddiqui also possessed the substances, which were sealed in bottles and glass jars, the report added.

Following her arrest, one day later on July 18, 2008, a party of the US personnel, including two FBI special agents, a US Warrant Officer, a Captain, and US military interpreters, arrived at the Afghan where Siddiqui was being held, the police report claimed.

The personnel entered a second floor meeting room – unaware that Siddiqui was being held there, unsecured, behind a curtain.

The report that might seem to be a fiction story further stated that the Warrant Officer took a seat and placed his M-4 rifle on the floor next to the curtain. Shortly after the meeting began, the Captain heard a woman’s yell behind the curtain and, when he turned, saw Siddiqui holding the Warrant Officer’s rifle and pointing it directly at the Captain.

The police report quoted Siddiqui as saying, “May the blood of [unintelligible] be directly on your [unintelligible, possibly head or hands].” The interpreter seated closest to Siddiqui lunged at her and pushed the rifle away as Siddiqui pulled the trigger. Siddiqui fired at least two shots but no one was hit. The Warrant Officer returned fire with a 9 MM service pistol and fired approximately two rounds at Siddiqui’s torso, hitting her at least once.

Despite being shot, Siddiqui struggled with the officers when they tried to subdue her; she struck and kicked them while shouting in English that she wanted to kill Americans. After being subdued, Siddiqui temporarily lost consciousness. The agents and officers then provided medical aid to Siddiqui.

Ironically, the American authorities could not prove that Afia shot at the American soldiers, as the gun they referred that was used by Afia was having no fingerprints of her.

ISLAMABAD : Expressing dismay over the unexpected verdict in Dr Aafia Siddiqui case in the US, Pakistan has said that it would determine its future course of action by consulting her family members and lawyers. At a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said.

“We are dismayed over the unexpected verdict in Dr Aafia case. The government of Pakistan made extensive diplomatic and legal efforts on her behalf and would continue these efforts in future.” The President, Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister had taken up the issue at different levels of the US Administration for her release on compassionate grounds. Under the directions of the Prime Minister Dr Aafia was also extended all legal support through embassy in Washington, he said.

The government of Pakistan, he said would consult the family of Dr Aafia and the team of defence lawyers to determine the future course of action and the government would do all that is needed to provide justice to Dr Aafia.

Commenting on the presence of the US soldiers, he said that some US soldiers were in Pakistan to train personnel of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) in NWFP in an effort to combat insurgency and militancy. However, the spokesman did not disclose the total number of the US soldiers present in Pakistan at the moment.

About the Indian’s Foreign Minister’s dialogue offer on Kashmir issue, the spokesman said that Pakistan always believed in resolving the issues through negotiation and dialogue but the talks must be result-oriented. He added that water issue with India was getting serious and Pakistan was thinking to take it up at appropriate forum.

The spokesman maintained that India had breached the Indus Water Treaty by announcing construction of dams. The spokesman said that Pakistan has a clear-cut stance on Kashmir issue, adding that Pakistan would continue its support to the Kashmiris at every forum. To a question, Basit said that Pakistan would welcome international community for any role in settling the Jammu and Kashmir and other issues with India.

About Pakistan’s role in the reintegration and reconciliation in Afghanistan, the spokesman said that it was Afghanistan to determine the role to be played by any other country to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan. He added that Pakistan was always ready to play a positive and constructive role for brining peace and stability in the neighbouring country. Peace in Afghanistan was in the better strategic interest of Pakistan, he said.

Responding to a question, he said that there was dissimilarity between the situation in Pakistan and in Afghanistan as security forces in our country were successfully defeating the militants and there was no need of reconciliation with them and such situation was not prevailing in Afghanistan at present.

About the body scanning of Pakistan passengers at the US airports, he said that Pakistan has taken up the issue with the US high officials including Richard Holbrooke and expressed the hope that the discriminatory law would be revisited. Answering another question, he said that there was complete consensus and realisation among the international community at the recent London conference on Afghanistan that Pakistan could play important reconciliatory role in Afghanistan. However, he expressed his concerns over the growing role of India in Afghanistan.

* Says ultimate objective is repatriation of Dr Aafia

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will take all steps to secure the release and return home of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist who stands convicted by a US court for shooting at her US interrogators in Afghanistan, according to the Foreign Office on Thursday.

Aafia, 37, was convicted in a New York court on Wednesday for grabbing a US officer’s rifle while she was being questioned in 2008 in Afghanistan and firing at FBI agents and military personnel as she was wrestled to the ground. The jury gave a unanimous verdict on seven counts, including attempted murder and assault. Though guilty on two attempted murder counts, the jury said the crime was not premeditated. Aafia is a US-trained neuroscientist who spent years living in the US.

Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told a regular briefing the government would do its best to secure Dr Aafia’s release.

“The ultimate objective is to get her back to Pakistan and we would do everything possible and we’ll apply all possible tools,” said Basit.

FO disappointed: He also expressed dismay over the “unexpected verdict” in Aafia’s case. He said the government would consult Aafia’s family and a team of defence lawyers to determine the future course of action.

He said Pakistan had made “extensive diplomatic and legal efforts” on Aafia’s behalf. He said the president, the prime minister and the foreign minister had already taken up the matter at various levels of the US administration for her release on “compassionate grounds”.

By AHMED QURAISHI

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—If Americans and the Brits show little respect for Pakistani citizens today, it is because Pakistani rulers refuse to take a stand on national pride. Pakistanis have been rotting in Indian and Afghan jails, but Pakistan’s incumbent president honors Karzai by inviting him for his inauguration party. Indians send dead bodies of Pakistani prisoners and all we do is release Indian terrorists convicted of killing Pakistani citizens under Indian-sponsored terrorism, instead of sending them to the gallows.

The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have been deliberately humiliating Pakistan by targeting Pakistani students at will, in some cases framing Pakistanis in fake cases. It’s one way of giving Pakistan more bad press and putting pressure for more Pakistani concessions.

But with the case of this dying Pakistani woman, Pakistan has a chance to correct one more wrong that we have accepted in this so-called war on terror.

Just as the Pakistani military has forced the United States to review its wrong policy of trampling on Pakistani interests in the region and paying lip service to us while empowering India, it is time that the Americans – and also the Brits and the Indians, as I explain below – be firmly warned that humiliating Pakistan and Pakistanis as part of United States’ post-9/11 policy will not be tolerated.

I mention the military because Pakistanis have little faith that their politicians, who often play the role of apologists for the US and UK, will ever take a stand for Pakistan’s interest. Those politicians who do are not in power.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case reeks of anti-Pakistanism that Washington has practiced for the past eight years while courting Pakistan as an ally in the war for the occupation of Afghanistan.

Dr. Aafia’s latest pictures show a dying woman ruthlessly tortured by Americans in US custody. Two of her three children, kidnapped with her from Pakistan’s streets, are missing.

It shames most Pakistanis to think that, while she was tortured and possibly raped by Americans in Afghanistan for years, the government of former President Pervez Musharraf did little to raise a voice for her and other Pakistanis who probably continue to rot in various US-run jails and dungeons in Afghanistan. President Zardari, opposition leader Nawaz Sharif, and a long list of Pakistani politicians have barely raised her case in their interactions with US officials.

We understand the constraints of our politicians. Their money and properties are in London and New York. In fact, they count on US support to remain in power and not be removed by the military or by the people of Pakistan. That’s why instead of boycotting US diplomats in solidarity with Dr. Aafia, US Ambassador Anne Patterson and other US diplomats continue to receive generous treatment in Pakistani circles. Last week Pakistani websites circulated pictures of known Pakistani journalists dancing away at a private party at the US Embassy, in a country where US drones have killed close to 1,000 Pakistani women and children while ‘successfully’ targeting some 20 low-level terrorists.

Betrayed and abandoned by her own, Dr. Aafia was saved not by Pakistan but by Yvonne Ridly, a British journalist.

Yet the official Pakistani reaction remains lazy and apologetic. The government of Asif Zardari is now funding Dr. Aafia’s lawyers. But how complacent the government has been can be judged from the fact that Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani had to personally telephone Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington Husain Haqqani last week to ask him to expedite the effort to secure Dr. Aafia’s release and provide ‘daily updates’ on her case.

A QUESTION OF HONOR

For eight years, Washington deceived Pakistan as it consolidated the position of India and other anti-Pakistan warlords in Afghanistan. The Americans showed insensitivity bordering on disdain as they trampled on legitimate Pakistani strategic and security interests. The US media single-handedly demonized Pakistan and created a false global alarm over Pakistan’s nuclear assets.

During the same period, Pakistanis have been abused as a state policy in the United States and Britain. No other countries in the world abuse Pakistanis like US and UK.

Adnan Mirza is a Pakistani student in Houston who is in jail for the past several years, without evidence, in a case where undercover FBI agents pretending to be Muslims joined him in a hiking trip and planted evidence to arrest him as a potential terrorist. US refuses to release the kid depite the lack of any credible evidence. In the UK, Prime Minister Gordon Brown lied to his own people last year about an alleged ‘big terrorist plot’. His government rounded up innocent Pakistani students and ruined their lives just to build British public’s support for sending more troops to Afghanistan.

In 2006, Indian intelligence officers and Hindu fundamentalists burned 60 Pakistanis alive on Indian soil. The victims believed the peace talks between Pakistan and India and boarded the so-called ‘friendship train’ to visit that country, which was later attacked and burned. Pakistani government and politicians have failed to pursue that case. Can you believe this? Sixty Pakistanis burned alive and there’s no one to talk about it? Imagine if 60 Indians or Americans or Brits were burned alive in Pakistan aboard a train?

Pakistani inmates routinely return from Indian jails with severe mental disorders. All this abuse against Pakistanis and there isn’t as much as a squeak from Pakistan’s failed and inept rulers.

Pakistani government can change this. It can start with Dr. Aafia’s case and take a stand and demand US release her. We can retaliate. Let’s stop US military supply routes that run through Pakistan for a week.

It is time Pakistan warned the United States that Pakistanis will hold the US government responsible if Dr. Aafia dies as a result American torture.

The American policy if creating hostility against Pakistanis must come to an end.

After the guilty verdict against Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani woman charged with attempted murder in the U.S, was announced, Elaine Whitfield Sharp, her attorney, told reporters outside the Federal Court House in New York Wednesday that government of Pakistan had put a gag order on Dr. Siddiqui’s family as a pre-condition to release her son, Ahmed.

Despite all the bravado of Pakistani officials implying that Dr. Siddiqui would be released, this verdict ensures that she will spend a few more decades in U.S. custody.

Sharp told reporters that her client, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was picked up by ISI on March 29, 2003 in Karachi. They arrived in two black cars and placed Siddiqui in one car and the children in another car.

Dr. Siddiqui says that she was immediately hooded and drugged and when she woke up she was tied to a gurney in a place that could not have been Karachi because the air was very dry.

Sharp also discussed the issue of the missing children. She said that the baby was reported killed during the arrest, but Dr. Siddiqui does not know if the girl, Maryam, who would now be 11 years old, is alive or not.

Dr. Siddiqui was shown a picture of her baby laying in a pool of blood.

American reporters continued to find Dr.Siddiqui’s claims incredulous and questioned Sharp on the plausibility. Do you really believe her?, a reporter asked Sharp. “Yes!”, she replied categorically.

Sharp said that a gag order was placed on the family by the Government of Pakistan, who made this a pre-condition for the release of the oldest child Ahmed. This is why no one from the family has been able to talk openly about what may have happened to her and her children for 5 years.

Many reporters have also said that a Pakistani official who frequented the proceedings and told them “off the record” that Dr. Siddiqui was actually part of an Al-Qaeda sleeper cell.

Many legal observers have questioned if there was a conflict of interest in the Government of Pakistan paying for the defense when they themselves are implicated in her kidnapping.

Dr. Siddiqui, according to her attorney, requested all her supporters not to engage in any violence in protest against the verdict.

In the United States, she’s been dubbed “the most dangerous woman in the world.” In Pakistan, she is seen as a victim of American injustice in the fight against al-Qaeda. buy cialis online cheap And at the opening of her trial in New York, the judge found her too disruptive and had her removed from the courtroom.

“I was never planning a bombing! You’re buying propecia lying!” Aafia Siddiqui shouted as she was taken out of court less than two hours into the proceedings yesterday.

The outburst came as U.S. Army Captain Robert Snyder testified that documents found in Dr. Siddiqui’s possession walmart pharmacy levitra buy cialis overseas included targets for a mass casualty attack, including the Empire buy real viagra without prescription State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street and the Brooklyn Bridge.

There was shouting in Pakistan, too, at demonstrations Buy online Levitra in cities across the country in support of Dr. Siddiqui, who buy amoxicillin no prescription is a national cause célèbre as a symbol buy levitra online viagra online proscar of Muslims mistreated Buy Viagra, Buy Cialis, Buy Levitra Without Prescription during U.S. antiterrorism efforts, just like the prisoners Online buy Viagra at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, or Bagram, the Afghan prison where Order Generic Accutane Online without Prescription her supporters say she was secretly held for years.

Dr. cheap nolvadex Siddiqui’s frail appearance and tormented outbursts in buy flagyl online pretrial hearings have added to allegations that she cytotec iud has had to endure years of torture since going missing from her hometown of Karachi in 2003. But according to her detractors, including her former husband Amjad Khan, viagera she was a jihadist who spent those years on the run. Some have even suggested that she became a double agent, working at some point against al-Qaeda.

U.S. cheap acomplia officials have accused Dr. Siddiqui, a 37-year-old neuroscientist educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, of working for al-Qaeda, in particular viagra online cheap as a facilitator for the 9/11 hijackers. The only charges she faces in the New York court, however, are related to the extraordinary circumstances of her Viagra online supposed capture amoxicillin levaquin Buying cialis cheap levitra generic price levitra prescription amoxil in buy cialis fast shipping Afghanistan in 2008.

“They couldn’t find a more innocent person,” says Fauzia Siddiqui, Aafia’s sister in Karachi. “I don’t believe that there’s any justice possible in the post-9/11 U.S. system.”

Fauzia Siddiqui cares for 13-year-old Ahmed, one of her sister’s diflucan buy online three children, buy canadian viagra who were all with her when she disappeared. The whereabouts of the other two, Suleman, who would where cheap Ampicillin Without Prescription buy online can i buy cialis online generic amoxil now be 7, and Maryam, 10, remain a mystery.

Dr. Siddiqui’s family says she was abducted by Pakistani intelligence and then handed over to American agents.

Shortly after the stories of Dr. Siddiqui’s alleged detention at Bagram hit the generic levitra Buy Cialis Professional Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed price international headlines in 2008, she turned up in American custody. U.S. authorities Cialis drug interactions said she was arrested after acting suspiciously in Ghazni, Afghanistan, a town 80 kilometres Viagra buy levitra vardenafil online buy south of Kabul, and found with documentation on U.S. landmarks and jars containing chemicals.

According to the U.S. account, when in custody at a police station in Ghazni, the petite Dr .Siddiqui jumped out from behind a curtain, Tadalis SX grabbed an M-4 rifle that was lying at the foot of a U.S. soldier, and shot at him twice, missing. A second soldier fired back, hitting her in the stomach. She was then flown to the United States.

In New York, she faces life in prison on viagra online buy charges of attempted murder, armed assault on U.S. officers and employees Kamagra Gold and discharging a firearm during Cialis Professional a crime Levitra amoxicillin amoxil of violence – all stemming from the Ghazni Buy trimox online incident.

Defence lawyer rimonabant levitra drugs Charles Swift – whom Dr. Siddiqui has disowned – told jurors there was no conclusive evidence she ever picked up the rifle. “There are many different versions of how this happened,” he said.

In Pakistani cities such as Islamabad, Lahore buy cialis and Karachi, there were small but emotional demonstrations.

“They [the Americans] are just amoxil buy cialis now cheap Cialis trying Buy Antibiotics medications to lock up people to show they have some bad guys, to try to prove they are winning the war,” 18-year-old student Mohammad 424 buy viagra | where to buy cialis without prescription | order online levitra bin Ismail said in Islamabad. “They are using people like trophies.”

The fact that Dr. Siddiqui is a woman seems to have generated much anger in conservative Pakistan, where her support is cheap ampicillin buy noticeably from the religious right. “It’s a case of rendition,” said Amina Janjua, buy Ampicillin cheap online Drugstore a local campaigner for missing viagra sales people. “We feel that as a Pakistani nation, our respect, honour and dignity is at stake.”

NEW YORK: The Pakistan government is doing all it can at the diplomatic and legal fronts to win freedom for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, the neuroscientist whose trial on murder Online buy kamagra pills buy Levitra charges takes place next week, Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani said Friday. Kamagra jelly buy Without Prescription cheap Ampicillin online Introducing to the U.S.-based Pakistani correspondents the buy propecia cheap three-member “A-class” legal defence team, retained by the viagra buy cheap amoxicillin amoxil purchase levitra online Pakistan government, he said that the lawyers would put up a strong defence in a bid to bring to an end Ms. Siddiqui’s difficulties. The legal team comprises Charles Swift, Ms. Linda Moreno and Ms. Elaine Sharp.

These Brand Viagra eminent lawyers were buy viagra online pharmacy cleared by the Manhattan viagra buy cheap Federal Court on September 2. Ms. Siddiqui, who is charged with shooting at her U.S. interrogators buy cialis online cheap in Afghanistan buy merck propecia Online Levitra buy last July, has vehemently denied attacking any one. She’s amoxil online not facing terrorism Buy Orlistat Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed charges.

Following the selection of a jury on Thursday, her trial is set to begin January canadian buy online diflucan pharmacy levitra 19, when cheap ampicillin buy opening buy viagra europe | buy cialis no rx | buy levitra low price statements will be made by the prosecution and defence lawyers following which the government will produce its first witnesses.

The whole process is expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.

Haqqani said amoxicillin amoxil that the Viagra effects dosage people of Pakistan believe Buy sumycin online that the charges against Ms. Siddiqui were “not true” and that she was being victimized. They want her released immediately. acomplia cheap The top Pakistani diplomat here buy online acomplia said that President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza

Gilani and the Pakistan Embassy in Washington had all made efforts for her release and were continuing to do so.

Speaking to correspondents, Swift, the lawyer, said that the charge against Ms. Siddiqui was baseless. Over the last four months, the team had worked hard and gathered as much buy cialis fast shipping information as possible to buy real viagra without prescription buy cialis overseas build a strong defence.

He had also visited Ghazni in Afghanistan where the alleged shooting incident had taken place Buy Amoxil and interviewed witnesses and officials in that buy generic levitra cialis professional city. In fact, he added, judicial hearings Buy online Cialis should have taken place there.

“We’re now ready,” Swift told correspondents. He said he could not predict the outcome of the Viagra Jelly case, which depended on several factors, including cheap flagyl the evidence produced in the court. But he said he believed in the American justice system.

As regards the jury, which comprises a cross-section of the people, Swift said he has faith in the basic goodness of U.S. citizens and the way they take their responsibility in courts. The lawyer said they would fight for Ms. buy levaquin Siddiqui as “great injustice” had online pharmacy levitra been done to her. “If she is convicted, she will get life sentence; if she is acquitted, levitra 424 buy viagra | where to buy cialis without prescription | order online levitra drugs she will get her life back.” Replying to a question, viagera buy levitra online cialis soft Swift said although they cheap online Drugstore buy Ampicillin have been paid by the buy viagra Pakistan government, their task was solely to defend Cialis buy levitra vardenafil online Ms. Siddiqui.

When nolvadex breast cancer a correspondent pointed out that Ms. Siddiqui has disowned the defence team, Swift said that she had suffered a lot and he understood her state of mind. But the defence team’s efforts would be to ensure that she gets a fair trial.

About the campaign being conducted Online buy Viagra by a section of the American press against Cialis alternative Ms. Siddiqui linking her to al-Qaeda, Ms. Moreno, a prominent lawyer, Tadalis SX Brand Cialis said it was unlikely to take any significant effect on jury members.

There are always such elements trying to vitiate the atmosphere but it won’t work. As regards the concerns being voiced by Ms. Siddiqui’s Buy Antibiotics medications family, Moreno said she feels cytotec buy amoxil online buy online their pain and viagra online fully sympathized with them.

All buy vardenafil she could say that they will do their best in the court. Asked about the impact of Ms. Sidduqi’s demand for the exclusion of Jews from the jury panel and her anti-Israel statements, Swift Buy Viagra said, “I don’t know”. But Moreno said that Ms. Siddiqui’s incarceration had damaged her mind.
