New Yorker goes on a hunger strike to protest MIT trained Neuroscientist’s guilty conviction

The conviction of MIT trained Neuroscientist, Dr. Afia Siddiqui has been met with many protests worldwide.  A New Yorker of Pakistani descent is protesting by going on a hunger strike in front of the UN building.

Muhammad Aamish, a graduate of New York’s Queens College, began his protest on Friday in the Ralph Bunche park, named after an American educator, political scientist, and United Nations mediator.  Aamish called the jury’s verdict “biased”, and told reporters he would continue his hunger strike until Dr. Siddiqui is released or an assurance is given to him that she will be released.

There have been many peaceful protests throughout Dr. Siddiqui’s native country Pakistan condemning the jury’s decision to convict Dr. Siddiqui.  Many more protests are planned by the youth groups of Pakistan in an effort to secure her release.

She studied at MIT and at Brandeis where she received a Ph.D in Neuroscience. Thus, she was both an educated and in some sense, a westernized woman. Both her Pakistani-born father and Pakistani husband are physicians who trained in the West, in England and America, respectively; her brother and sister are also highly trained professionals. Nevertheless, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui learned to hate America, hate Jews, and hate Israel right here in liberal America.

Jury adjudges Aafia guilty

NEW YORK – An American jury on Wednesday returned a guilty verdict against Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani neuroscientist who is accused of shooting at US interrogators in Afghanistan, after more than two weeks of trial in a Manhattan Federal Court.

The decision came two days after Dr. Siddiqui’s case was sent to the jury, which is composed of 7 women and five men, as soon as prosecution and defence lawyers wrapped up their closing arguments.

According to the prosecution, Ms. Siddiqui, 37, grabbed a US warrant officer’s rifle while she was detained for questioning in July 2008 at a police station in Ghazni and fired at FBI agents and military personnel as she was pushed down to the ground.

Pakistani found guilty of US attack

A US-educated Pakistani woman who was arrested in Afghanistan and accused of shooting at her US interrogators, has been found guilty of attempted murder by a court in the US.

Aafia Siddiqui was found guilty by a New York court on Wednesday after a 12-member jury reached a unanimous verdict, but said the crime was not premeditated.

Siddiqui showed no emotion as the jury pronounced its verdict – reached after two days of deliberations – but shouted out as the jury members were leaving the court.

US jury finds Dr Aafia guilty on all counts

NEW YORK: A US jury on Wednesday found Pakistani neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui guilty of two counts of attempted murder, though the crime was not found by the jury to be premeditated. She was also convicted of armed assault, using and carrying a firearm and assault of US officers and employees. A 12-member jury deliberated three days in a Manhattan federal court before unanimously declaring her guilty as charged.

Although she was not charged with terrorism, prosecutors described Aafia as a would-be terrorist who had also plotted to bomb New York.

In her closing arguments, defence attorney Linda Moreno accused the prosecutors of trying to play on the jury’s fears. “They want to scare you into convicting Aafia Siddiqui,” she said.

US court declares Aafia guilty

NEW YORK: US Court Wednesday held Dr Aafia Siddiqui–a US-educated Pakistani woman as guilty of trying to kill American servicemen in Afghanistan.

According to Geo News, the court declared its verdict on Dr Siddiqui at 2pm (local time).

Aafia Siddiqui, 37, a neuroscientist trained at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was found guilty on all charges by a jury in federal court.

She was accused of being a would-be terrorist who in July 2008 grabbed a rifle at an Afghan police station where she was being interrogated and tried to gun down a group of US servicemen.
