Protest held for Aafia’s release

ISLAMABAD – Civil society members on Wednesday held a protest demonstration outside the National Press Club to press their demand for Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s release from an American jail before the 18th Eid of her imprisonment.
The protesters slammed the government’s indifference towards the issue and chanted anti-US slogans. They described Aafia as the daughter of the whole Muslim world and said every Muslim country should raise its voice to get her released.

In a written letter presented during the protest, Aafia’s mother appealed to the US and Pakistani governments to make possible the release of her daughter before Eid, a move that could also stable the US economy and strengthen the relation between the two countries.

‘Long March’ for Aafia’s release from 10th

ISLAMABAD – Exhibiting grave concerns over the alleged sluggishness of the PPP-led regime to get Dr Aafia Siddique released from illegal imprisonment of USA, civil society activists on Wednesday announced to launch “Long March” from 10th of March.

A series of events are in pipeline as a part of a “Long March” that would be launched from Faisalabad Bar Association. The announcement was made in a peaceful demonstration at Abpara Chowk organised by the Pakistan Professionals Forum and student community of the twin cities to condemn and convey shock and abhorrence against the unjust verdict in Dr Aafia Siddique’s case and to show solidarity with her and her family.

Fauzia holds Haqqani responsible for Aafia conviction

LAHORE: Dr. Fauzia Siddiqi has held Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, responsible for spoiling the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqi in the US court.

Addressing a press conference along with Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan in Lahore today (Monday), Dr. Siddiqi said Aafia did not want to fight her case in American court, but the Pakistani envoy took it to the court.

“Now it is the responsibility of Hussain Haqqani to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels,” she said.

“We would not have seen this day, had the government taken up the matter of Dr. Aafia through diplomatic channels,” added Siddiqi.

PTI protest for Aafia’s release continues

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has urged the incumbent government to make all out efforts for early release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui from US incarceration urging that her trial should be carried out in the local courts if necessary.

Protesters belonging to PTI Women Wing demanded this during a protest demonstration staged in front of National Press Club on Saturday.

They expressed their deep concerns over the way the US jury convicted Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

The protesters were chanting slogans to express their solidarity with Dr Aafia as “We reject the conviction of Aafia; Release the daughter of the nation Aafia from the clutches of cruel Americans”.

Diplomatic, legal efforts on for Aafia’s release, says Haqqani

NEW YORK: The Pakistan government is doing all it can at the diplomatic and legal fronts to secure the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist detained in the US, Pakistani Ambassador Hussain Haqqani said on Friday.

Introducing a three-member “A-class” legal defence team retained by the Pakistan government to US-based Pakistani correspondents, Haqqani said the lawyers would put up a strong defence in a bid to bring an end to Aafia’s difficulties. The legal team comprises Charles Swift, Linda Moreno and Elaine Sharp.

These eminent lawyers were cleared by the Manhattan Federal Court on September 2.

BACKGROUND

Dr Buy Levaquin Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed Aafia Siddiqui, the American educated Pakistani scientist and mother of three was detained for years by the US in Bagram. She has been the victim of the US programme of secret detention for five years since having been kidnapped in Karachi by Pakistan security services in 2003 along with her three children.

On Monday 4th August 2008, federal prosecutors in the US confirmed that Aafia Siddiqui was extradited to the US from Afghanistan where they allege she had been detained since mid-July 2008. The US administration claims that she was arrested by Afghani forces outside Ghazni governor’s compound with manuals on explosives and ‘dangerous substances in sealed jars’ on her person. They further allege that whilst in custody she shot at US officers and was injured in the process.

According to her lawyer, Elaine Whitfield Sharp, “We do know she was at Bagram for a long time. It was a long time. According to my client she was there for years and she was held in American custody; her treatment was horrendous.”

Aafia’s claim is contrary to the heavily contested position of the US administration that she was detained in July by Afghan forces while attempting to bomb the compound of the governor of Ghazni. The US has previously denied the presence of female detainees in Bagram and that Aafia was ever held there, bar for medical treatment in July 2008.

Aafia Siddiqui now faces trial in the US in circumstances that can only be described as strange at best. Questions remain as to her own whereabouts over the last five years and still that of her children.

Her medical condition is currently extremely poor as she suffers from gun shot wounds, and part of her intestine has been removed. Her condition is not made any easier by the flights of stairs she is forced to climb by herself in her condition during visits and the strip and cavity searches that she is forced to endure.

Cageprisoners suggests that concerned inviduals who cannot attend organise their own local protests in solidarity.
