The lawyers said under the international law, the appeal filed against conviction to Dr Aafia commands earliest decision as the alleged offence was not proved but no pain has been taken to hear the appeals and no body bothered to agitate this issue.

She is serving 86-year jail term on a flimsy and concocted charge that she tried to kill a US marine while in Kabul. It appears that there is no renewed effort to secure her release.

Dr Aafia’s sister, Fauzia Siddiqui, has accused the government of making massive funds available to some of its favourite on the pretext of pursuing her case but they were instead enjoying themselves with that money. Fauzia very rightly said that the golden opportunity for her sister’s release was when the decision to let Raymond Davis, who was guilty of killing two Pakistani citizens in broad daylight, go scot-free was taken.

There is hardly any doubt that it is the responsibility of the federal government to make an all-out effort to secure release of any Pakistani national being persecuted in a fake and highly ill-motivated case. Political and religious parties, NGOs and civil society as a whole have been demanding Dr Aafia’ Siddiqui’s immediate release.

But our ruling leadership is immune to the demand because it might annoy their American masters. It is high time the Pakistan government and its embassy in Washington launched a fresh effort for her release so that the family could have some hope of seeing her again.

LAHORE, (SANA): The Jamaat-e-Islami will observe Dr Aafia Siddiqui Day on the appeal of the JI chief, Syed Munawar Hasan, today (Friday) to express its solidarity with the respected daughter of the nation jailed by a US court for 86 years for alleged terrorism.

Rallies calling for Dr Aafia’s release will be held in the federal and the provincial capitals besides major cities. Seminars will also be organized in different cities where the speakers from different walks of life will address.

In Karachi, a big rally will be taken out from Empress Road up to Regal. JI chief, Syed Munawar Hasan, Dr Aafia’s sister Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, and JI Karachi chief, Muhamamd Husain Mehnati will lead and address.

In the Punjab capital, a women and children rally will be held outside the Lahore Press Club in the afternoon. Dr Farid Ahmed Piracha, will address. In Peshawar, a rally will be held outside the local Press Club. In the federal capital, a seminar will be held at Alflah Hall where the JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch, and deputy chief, JI Punjab, Mian Muhammad Aslam, will address. At Rawalpindi, a women and children walk will be held from Al-Ikram building up to Liaqat Bagh, Murree road.

In Quetta, a rally will be held at Mizan Chowk where JI Balochistan chief, Abdul Mateen Akhundzada will address. At Multan, a rally will be held from Chowk Ghanta Ghar up to Husain Agahi and will be addressed by the JI Punjab chief, Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar. Rallies will be also held at Hyderabad and Sukkur.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) will observe ‘Dr Aafia Release Day’ on September 16. This was decided in a meeting held at the Idara-e-Noor-e-Haq on Tuesday. The day will be observed across the country and a big rally will be staged from Empress Market to Regal Chowk in the city. Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hassain will lead the rally. Meanwhile, the JI will also observe Youm-e-Dua on Friday all over Sindh against the rain devastation that hit thousands of people and crops, causing financial and human losses.
