In a letter addressed to US President Barack Obama and released to the media, Lord Nazir Ahmed along with Lord Altaf Sheikh, Lord Patel and MP Muhammad Sarwar have stressed that Dr.Siddiqui’s cause has become a rallying point for the people of Pakistan .

“We must  stress that anti-American feeling her treatment is causing in an area key to success against extremist insurgency,” the Parliamentarians said.

The lawmakers hoped that President Obama, who values the admirable founding principles of his nation, will use his good offices to resolve the matter which is very dear to the people of Pakistan.

“We are informed that in this case there was an utter lack of concrete evidence tying Dr Siddiqui to the weapon  she allegedly fired at a US officer. All scientific and forensic evidence such as DNA testing and finger printing have exonerated Dr.Siddiqui and on the basis of this we find very difficult to identify how a guilty verdict was reached.”

They also strongly believed that a grave miscarriage of justice has occurred in Dr.Siddiqui’s case which contravenes both the US obligations as a UN member state and the family’s rights under the Sixth Amendment of the US constitution.

“We therefore as that her missing children be located post haste and that the family be returned to Pakistan as innocent victims of the war on terror.”

The JI leaders said that it has become loud and clear that American justice system is based on discrimination and it has duality while delivering justice to Muslims. They angered over the American court by saying that witness were proved false but it convicted Aafia as guilty for the sake of protecting the moral of American soldiers which amounts to denial of justice by the court. The JI leaders said that the court issued a verdict that is based on prejudice and it afflicts the a woman and the entire Muslim Ummah.

In another resolution the JI Sindh lamented over the situation in Karachi which according it was disappointing. It read that the surge in crime rate and fast declining business and social activities have been depriving the citizens of Karachi of a peaceful environment. The parties at the helm of affairs have no concern with the problems of the masses and are only protecting their own entrenched interests of occupying plots and land grabbing. The JI leaders said that all coalition partners were part of this ongoing snap of crime so government is bound to provide compensation to all affected families of these tragedies and it should also ensure to implement the decisions decided in All Parties Conference organized by the Sindh government at CM’s House.

The JI leaders demanded to redress the declining standard of education in the province. They said that literacy rate though claimed by government increasing but the ground reality is that it has gone miles back. They urged upon the government to control increasing trend of carrying ammunition in the universities which has ended in killing of many youths in recent past.

They also pointed at the killings of many youths at Shah Latif University, Sindh University and Tando Jam Agriculture University where many students have lost their lives in firing between different student’s factions and this led to suspension of educational activities in the institutions. They asked the authorities to improve security measures at these universities and secure education and future of young students.

They sought the intervention of the US leadership and demanded a fair trial based on real facts and not assumptions. Lord Ahmed said he would be writing a letter to the US President Barack Obama carrying signatures of other British MPs calling for Dr.Siddiqui’s repatriation to Pakistan and withdrawal of case.

The Labour Peer further said he would also raise this question in the Parliament to ascertain how the British Government could help in this regard.

According to Lord Nazir, the conviction of Dr.Siddiqui has been received with great dismay in Pakistan which would further fuel anti-American feeling in the south Asian country.

“If US wants to create a good impression of itself in Pakistan, it should release Dr.Siddiqui and send her back to Pakistan,” he asserted.

He said no credible independent evidence was presented at the New York court and in the words of defence lawyers the decision of the jury was based on fear rather than facts.

Lord Altaf Sheikh, MP Muhammad Sarwar, Muhammad Saghir, a representative of Caged Prisoners which represent the inmates of Guantanamo Bay, Rabia Zia of UK Chapter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, journalist Yvonne Ridley, who witnessed the trial and Barrister Abid Hussain also spoke on the occasion.

The thrust of their speeches was to mobilise public opinion against Dr.Siddiqui’s conviction and call on Pakistani authorities to demand her repatriation as well making efforts to find the whereabouts of her two missing children.
Sarwar said Pakistani authorities must hold inquiry at their end to know the circumstances of her disappearance from Karachi in 2003 and her appearance in Kabul five years later.

Ridley said it was now up to the people of Pakistan to organise regular rallies in support of Dr.Siddiqui and send strong message of their resentment to the USA on this trial.

Barrister Abid Hussain urged the British Pakistanis to lobby their respective MPs and sign on-line petition in support of the neuroscientist for exerting maximum pressure on the US Government.

He confirmed that APL appreciates Lord Ahmed’s stance on Dr.  Siddiqui’s case and that the Association will support any drive Lord Ahmed initiates to campaign, and seek fair trial for Dr. Siddiqui.

He said it is strange that neuroscientist was first labelled as No.7 on the wanted list of Al-Qaeda and later was charged and tried for minor criminal offences and she never had the opportunity to wipe the stigma attached to her name being associated with the outfit which in itself is a criminal offence.

He said APL petition to the US leadership that American Government must consider withdrawing charges against Dr.Siddiqui and her repatriation to Pakistan forthwith, is just and based on equality and justice which must be seen to be done as in this current case rules of natural justice are not met.

Barrister Malik further said Dr. Siddiqui was left at the helms of a jury of 12 men from victim community of 9/11 who could never have found her “not guilty” if there is overwhelming western media publicity that she is an associate of Osama Bin Laden.

He urged the United States to set up a commission to adjudicate the questions of true facts surrounding Dr. Siddiqui’s arrest, allegations of torture and mal treatment at Bagram airfield, her two missing children, and the issue of extra judicial and extra territorial confinement and imprisonment at Bagram.

Dr Aafia Siddiui and her three children, seven-year-old Mohammed Ahmed, five-year-old Maryam, and eight-month-old Suleman, were allegedly kidnapped on March 28, 2003, by intelligence agencies without any warrants or notice.

In his report, IO Shahid Qureshi said that according to the statements recorded by Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, Dr Aafia SiddiquiÕs mother Asmat Siddiqui, and her son Mohammed Ahmed, FBI personnel had picked up Dr Aafia Siddiqui and her children. He told the court that his inspection of the site of the incident corroborated these statements.

He further submitted that the case was declared A-class after the instructions of senior officials, and added that no one had been nominated in the kidnapping case yet.

According to experts, the verdict could come early next week, although there is no fixed timeframe for the judgement.

The defence’s main argument was that evidence by the prosecution witnesses lacked coherence and their varying accounts were, in fact, contradictory – not only to each other but to themselves. Besides, the defence argued emphatically that there was no physical evidence produced by the prosecution to substantiate charges against Dr Aafia. The prosecution, they stated, tried to create an “atmosphere of fear” by producing handwritten notes by Aafia.

During her deposition, Dr Aafia clearly told the court that she recognised some of the notes but not all of them and that they had been put in a handbag given by her captors, who were threatening to harm her children.

Defence lawyers also focused on the fact that there were no fingerprints on the rifle allegedly used in the shooting incident and there were no holes in the walls created by the bullets allegedly fired. Nor was there any residue on the curtain that partitioned the room between Aafia and the US personnel in Afghanistan. The prosecution pressed their charges by stating that there were six witnesses to prove the alleged incident. Aafia’s trial began in the US District Court on January 19.

She is accused of grabbing an M4 rifle and firing at US soldiers and FBI agents who had gone to a police station in Ghazni, a day after her arrest in that Afghan city in July 2008.
