LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) general house on Thursday condemned the US jury verdict against Dr Aafia Siddiqui, terming it a brutal act by the country that claims to champion human rights. The bar also criticised the government of Pakistan for failing to protect its “innocent citizen”.

LHCBA adopted a resolution demanding Dr Aafia and her two children be released immediately as all allegations against her were baseless and she was a victim of American prejudice against Muslims.

Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal said it was not a fair decision and it had exposed the bias within the American judicial system. She said the American government’s discrimination against Muslims was at its peak during Siddiqui’s trial and no Muslim journalist was allowed to enter the court to cover the proceedings.

NEW YORK: The lawyers of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who has been convicted in a US court, refused to accept the verdict against the US-educated girl.

Siddiqui, a tiny, frail woman dressed in a beige tunic and white headscarf covering her mouth and forehead, showed no emotion as the jury pronounced its verdict.

After the verdict, outside the courthouse, Elaine Sharp, one of Siddiqui’s lawyers said the jury came to the wrong conclusion.

Siddiqui was arrested by Afghan police on trumped-up charges, according to which she was carrying containers of chemicals and notes referring to mass-casualty attacks and New York landmarks.

She was not charged in connection with those materials and the charges she was convicted of do not mention terrorism.

Instead, the case centered on an incident the next day in the Afghan police compound, where U.S. soldiers and FBI agents sought to question her. The irony is that no sound evidences could be presented at the court to prove the false story at Bagram incident.

Siddiqui’s defence attacked the government’s version of events, saying there was no forensic evidence to support it.

Another of Siddiqui’s defence attorneys, Charlie Swift, said there was no evidence the rifle had ever been fired, since no bullets, shell casings or bullet debris were recovered and no bullet holes detected.

Speaking to the many supporters of Siddiqui around the globe, Elaine Sharp called for a calm reaction to the guilty verdict.

Siddiqui faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and will be sentenced in May.

NEW YORK: A lawyer for Aafia Siddiqui on Thursday protested against heavier-than-usual security at the U.S. District Court where the Pakistani neuroscientist is being tried for attempted murder, saying the measures violated his client’s right to a free, fair and open trial. Just before the court adjourned on the third day of trial, Charles Swift, her lead lawyer, said that the court’s security men were asking people coming in to witness the proceedings to produce their personal identification even after passing through two check points.

A metal detector was put in place outside the 21st-floor courtroom, in addition to the ones already on the ground floor. Even journalists with press passes were asked to provide additional identification, like a drivers license or social security number. Swift, one of three top lawyers retained by the Pakistan government to defend Ms. Siddiqui, said that the jurors could also feel threatened by the tougher security measures enforced in the court. But Judge Berman said that he had no knowledge of the security steps being taken and would discuss with the relevant authorities on Friday.

Earlier, the day-long proceedings brought out two points clearly: The M-4 rife that Ms. Siddiqui is alleged to have grabbed to shoot at U.S. interrogators in Afghanistan did not have her fingerprints and that even the projectiles or casings of the two bullets fired from it were not found at the police outpost in Ghazni where the incident took place in July 2008. On the other hand, the American investigator found the casings and projectiles of the two bullets fired by the US military officer that hit and badly wounded Ms. Siddiqui. However, the prosecution continued to insist that the shots were fired by Ms. Siddiqui. FBI Special Agent Gordon Hurley, who was tasked with investigating the shooting incident, said he had dug through the area of the police outpost’s wall where two M-4 bullet had hit, but found no projectiles.

He said he had paid cash to the Afghan police for the damage he had done to the wall in his search for the projectiles. Dawn Cardi, the defence lawyer, asked Hurley why he did not take the rifle with all its attachments, including the sighting equipment, in his custody for fingerprinting. He said the army would not give him the attachments because it had shortage of equipment in the midst of combat operations in Afghanistan. He was also asked why he went to the crime scene with the Chief Warrent Officer, who is alleged to have shot at Ms. Siddiqui. Hurley said he needed him for investigation purposes. Under cross-examination, Agent Hurly said the delay in collecting evidence was due to logistical problems in the battle zone. “It is not New York City,” he said of Afghanistan.

FBI forensic expert T.J. Fife, who was cross-examined by Defence Lawyer Elaine Sharp, said that M-4 rifle arrived for analysis approximately fifteen days after the incident. He said he had used most modern methods to lift any fingerprints on it but there were none. But he said in his 6-year experience that there was only a 10% chance of obtaining fingerprints from a firearm due to its ‘non-porous’ surface. When Ms. Sharp pointed to some of the smooth surfaces on the weapon, Fife said due to the delay in receiving the rifle, others factors such as heat and humidity also played a part in erasing the impressions. Asked how many guns he has analyzed in his career, the FBI expert cited 10 to 20 weapons. Questioned why did he not take pictures of areas where finger prints could have been visible, FBI expert said they were of “no value.”

A lawyer for Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani neuroscientist, has denounced extra security measures at a U.S. court requiring visitors at her trial to show identification and sign in even after passing through two check points.

The extra security check comes on top of a metal detector placed outside the doorway of the Manhattan courtroom on the 21st floor of the building where Aafia Siddiqui is on trial for attempted murder. That detector is in addition to the ones already on the ground floor.

“The suggestion is that the public gallery may be a threat,” said Charles Swift, one of the three leading lawyers retained by the Pakistan government to defend Ms. Siddiqui.

Grilling spectators, often in front of jurors waiting to get into the courtroom, “is highly prejudicial,” Swift told Federal Judge Richard Berman.

Swift spoke out just before the court adjourned on Thursday, the third day of the trial.

But Judge Berman said that he had no knowledge of the security steps being taken and would discuss with the relevant authorities on Friday.

The US officials alleged that Aafia Siddiqui was seized on July 17, diflucan viagra Online buy Cialis online stores generic 2008 by the Afghan security forces in the Ghazni province buy proscar and claimed that documents, including formulas for explosives and chemical weapons, were found in her handbag. They said that while she was being interrogated, she grabbed a US warrant officer’s M-4 rifle and fired where to buy cialis without prescription two Buy Propecia Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed shots at the FBI agents and military personnel but missed and that the warrant officer then fired back, hitting her in the torso. She was brought to the United States to face charges of attempted murder Cialis Buy online Viagra generic name and assault.

Judge Richard Berman ordered Dr. Aafia Siddqui out of the Southern District of New York court on the first day of her trial after her shocking outburst proclaiming that she was held in a secret prison and her children were tortured.

The outburst was in response to the testimony of the first prosecution witness, Robert Lee Snyder, a Captain in the U.S. army in the intelligence division, who was asked to read out loud a document, which the prosecution alleges, was handwritten by the defendant and found in her possession.

The document describes mass casualties in United States and specifically talks about landmarks in New York City, including the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and Brooklyn Bridge amongst other targets. It also describes plans to explode a dirty bomb with radioactive material along with other types of attacks.

After hearing the document read out loud Dr. Siddiqui shouted out “It’s not true, I was held in a secret prison, my children were tortured, I was told to copy the magazine…”at which point she was taken out of the courtroom. Her outburst seemed to imply that the handwritten documents, which the judge is allowing into evidence despite objections by the defense, are actually a copy of a magazine article, which she was told to copy.

The prosecution has asked that she no longer be allowed in the room and that her comment be stricken from the record. Though Dr. Siddiqui has had several courtroom outbursts this is the first in front of the jury, who will probably never hear from her directly again.

When she was first brought into the courtroom, she again denied that her counsels represent her and said that she did not want to be here; “All I get is negativity. They accuse me of being anti-Semitic. I am not against anyone or any religion” Her defense stated in the court that her objection to being in the courthouse is because of the strip searches that she is subjected to every time she enters.

In their opening remarks the prosecution asked the jury to use their common sense when looking at the evidence or lack of evidence. They advised the jury that the evidence is not neat or in a clear order, due to what they described as the “chaos” of the incident. Thus they asked the jury to piece meal the evidence along the narrative they will present. They plan to present 6 eye witnesses who will testify to that narrative.

The defense on the other hand made the same appeal to use “common sense” when considering the fact that there is no forensic evidence indicating that Dr. Siddiqui ever touched or fired the M4 rifle, the alleged weapons.

Which common sense narrative the jury believes will decide Dr. Siddiqui’s fate. However, her support amongst grass roots organizations in the U.S. is rapidly growing. In the over crowded courtroom famous anti-war activist, Cindy Sheehan, sat in support of the defense along with members of “World Can’t Wait”, “Theater Against War”, and several other community groups.

In fact the courtroom was so crowded the court had to arranged for 2 overflow rooms. Her family expressed gratitude for the diversity of support she is beginning to get from Americans.

Aafia Siddiqui vs USA

The following is buy cialis fast shipping a summary based on a compilation of eyewitness accounts (It is not a transcript or complete account of a hearing that lasted about 2 hours):

The hearing was held at 2:30PM in courtroom viagra online buy 21-B of the federal court in Manhattan under presiding judge Richard cheap levitra generic Berman.

Approx 6 reporters and 25 -30 people where in attendance, mainly supporters of Dr. Aafia.

Dr. Aafia was brought to court by two US marshals, this time including one female officer.

* Upon arriving, Aafia made a public appeal that “no revenge should be taken in her name,” reminding the spectators that “Prophet Muhammad forgave those who did injustice to him.”

* She also stated that she did not accept the defense team as her lawyers and she relieves them and is boycotting the trial.

* Then she amoxil online sat down, remaining silent for the duration of the proceedings.

The purpose of the hearing was to determine what evidence will be allowed in the trial.

The key points made were:

Prosecution categorically stated that they will not be alleging that Aafia is a member target Viagra Jelly pharmacy online propecia levitra of Al-Qaeda or any terrorist organization, the Taliban or etc., but they Buy Cialis price comparison Viagra, Buy Cialis, Buy Levitra generic amoxil Without Prescription wanted to be able to use these phrases in the context of the trial.

Defense objected to that as being highly prejudicial. Judge Berman did not rule.

The prosecution also wanted to bring Aafia’s education into evidence to show that she studied at MIT and therefore had knowledge of sciences and chemicals. The defense objected that there is nothing in charges about any chemical weapons. They reminded the court that the government had limited this case to just the shooting and now wanted to bring in selective outside information only to confuse viagra online price and prejudice the public and cover online acomplia up the holes in their case.

Again the judge did not rule.

The defense wanted to exclude any items claimed to be on Aafia person since the Afghan police who arrested Dr. Aafia would not be brought to court and two of the Afghan police officers were NOT even able to identify Aafia as the person they arrested! The online pharmacy defense Online buy cialis 424 buy viagra | where to buy cialis without prescription | order online levitra overseas buy Viagra then argued that any materials allegedly in Aafia’s possession tadalafil would buy levitra vardenafil be heresay.

The defense argued that Aafia simply did not do any of what is Buy Viagra, Buy Cialis, Buy Levitra Without Prescription in the charges. online viagra generic The forensic evidence showed the following:

* No fingerprints on the gun

* No DNA

* No residue

* No bullets recovered

The asserted that only cheap acomplia shooting that occured was that Aafia Siddiqui was shot.

The defense stated Viagra online buy that based on all the evidence they have been shown, <a href="http://aviagraforsale.com/item.php?name=Cialis order levitra Professional”>Cialis Professional they are so confident that Aafia never even diflucan buy online touched the gun, that the would concede “intent” if it could be proven that Aafia in fact picked up the gun.

They would question the credibility of any witness that claimed otherwise.

The defense wanted to limit expert testimony regarding importance of fingerprints. Prosecution argued that buy buy cheap amoxicillin cialis soft online lack of fingerprints was not unusual.

The Buy Antibiotics medications defense wanted to show video deposition of Afghani police. The judge cytotec side effects said he was uncomfortable with technology but would consider it and he put the onus of providing equipment on the defense.

The defense pointed out that one of the FBI agents who initially Ampicillin online went to the scene has a history of disciplinary action and that history should be brought into the case. The prosecution stated cheapest levitra cheapest nolvadex that it was not relevant.

The <a zithromax href=”http://ampicillinpills.com”>cheap online buy Ampicillin Drugstore judge stated that he will issue his rulings on wednesday, January 13 at 9:00AM.

The jury selection is set to start Tadalis SX on January 13 at 10:00am after judge’s rulings.

Judge Cialis Berman did not allow jury questionaire and said he will decide what questions the defense is allowed to ask potential jurors. He wanted to limit the number and type of questions to allow for quick jury selection. This will make it hard for the defense to filter potetially prejudicial jurors.

The defense reuquested that any jurors with Indian or Hindiu amoxil cheap sensitivities be disqulified because some of Aafia’s statements Buy doxycycline online could be misconstrued to seem unfavorable to those groups.

No Daubert hearing for expert witnesses will be held.

The prosecution’s experts will be admitted despite defense Buy cheap viagra sales Levaquin objectoins to their qualifications.

The defense complained that the prosecution has still not turned over the list of witnesses they buy cialis pills intend to call so defense buy cialis online cheap has no idea who those witnesses are. It had previously Viagra online been agreed that the defense would get those names at least 1 week before the start of trial which meant start of jury selection per the judge. The judge agreed, but the prosecution argued that the judge moved the date up one week and they now wanted start of trial to be defined as start of opening statements so they will give the list of names by end of day on jan 12. The judge let the prosecution redefine the date. The prosecution also said they would only give names, no other information. The defense objected as that gives them no way to prepare properly to examine the buy real viagra without prescription witnesses.

There were procedural issues that needed resolution between defense and prosecution which the judge asked the 2 sides to resolve among themselves.

The defense again asked about allowing Aafia to be spared the strip searches and Buy cialis have a video link. The judge said cheap propecia he wanted now for her to have the right to confront buy amoxil her accuser so she must be forced to court.

(It should be noted that Cheap Accutane the defense made the argument that if Aafia’s ability to face her accusers is so paramount, why is this not applied to the “evidence” when those who accuse her of having this evidence are not being brought to court and so she has no right Buy online Levitra to confront them? However she still must be strip searched and brought to trial against her will for the sake of buy canadian viagra this same right?)

At the conclusion buy where Levitra Professional do you buy viagra cheap flagyl of the hearing, Aafia made one appeal to the public saying that she was for peace and wanted to help. She said that she was not against America and many injustices are being done to her. Many people in the audience cried as the U.S. mashalls again focibly removed her, Levitra physically pushing her at times.

The defense lawyers pleaded with the US marshalls and the MDC prison legal representative, Christa Colvin, to allow even a 5 minute meeting between Aafia buy online Ampicillin cheap Without Prescription and her brother but the US marshals order levitra refused. When her brother attempted to say a few words to her, the marshals turned Aafia’s head away so she could not respond.
