Rallies and seminars staged demanding Aafia’s release

The trial and sentencing of Aafia Siddiqui had sparked an outrage in Pakistan where most people viewed the case and the sentencing as a blatant anti-Muslim and unjust.

Participants of the ‘Release Aafia Day’ rally; organized by Jamaat-e-Islami, a right wing religious political party, chanted anti-American chanted slogans and demanded the release of 39-year old mother of three. The party’s chief Munawwar Hassan and other leaders addressing the rally expressed solidarity with Dr. Afia and her family termed 86 year sentence handed by the US Court on September 23 last year anti-Muslim, unjust.

The New York Court had found Siddiqui guilty of grabbing a rifle at a police station in the Afghan town of Ghazni where she was being interrogated in July 2008 and of trying to gun down her US interrogators in Ghazni, Afghanistan.
Prosecutors said she opened fire that did not hit anyone but was herself shot in the stomach before being subdued.

Protest held for Aafia’s release

ISLAMABAD – Civil society members on Wednesday held a protest demonstration outside the National Press Club to press their demand for Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s release from an American jail before the 18th Eid of her imprisonment.
The protesters slammed the government’s indifference towards the issue and chanted anti-US slogans. They described Aafia as the daughter of the whole Muslim world and said every Muslim country should raise its voice to get her released.

In a written letter presented during the protest, Aafia’s mother appealed to the US and Pakistani governments to make possible the release of her daughter before Eid, a move that could also stable the US economy and strengthen the relation between the two countries.

ISF holds rally for Aafia’s release

LAHORE: The Insaf Students Federation (ISF) on Tuesday took out a rally to express solidarity with Dr Aafia Siddiqui, demanding her immediate release.

“Insaf Rally”, which started from Faisal Chowk near the Punjab Assembly, was led by Dr Aafia’s sister Dr Fauzia Siddiqui while hundreds of students from different universities and colleges, including Superior University, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the Punjab University and the FC College University, participated in the rally and expressed resentment over the verdict against Dr Aafia by the US jury.

Carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-US and pro-Dr Aafia slogans, the charged protesters reached the Shimla Pahari near the US Consulate, Lahore, where Dr Fauzia and ISF office-bearers addressed the protesting students.

Nawaz urges more diplomatic efforts for Aafia’s release

LAHORE: Chief of Pakistan Muslim League-N Nawaz Sharif has urged the government to step up diplomatic efforts for the release of Dr. Aafia.

Nawaz Sharif demanded this during a meeting with Dr. Aafia’s sister Dr.Fouzia who met him at his residence in Raiwind.

Dr. Fouzia has thanked PML-N for its principle stand and requested Nawaz Sharif to raise voice at every forum in future also.

LHC orders steps for Aafia’s release

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court disposed of a petition on Monday directing the federal government to take effective measures for the release and repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui from US detention.

Dr Aafia has been convicted by a US court with attempted killing of US agents while in detention in Bagram, Afghanistan.

Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry directed the Foreign Affairs Ministry to evolve a strategy in consultation with the Law Ministry to take measures, if viable, for the release of Dr Aafia. The petition was filed by Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffrey.

The judge has already disposed of a petition filed by Mr Jaffrey seeking the doctor’s release and repatriation through the International Court of Justice. The judge ordered the Foreign Ministry to collect evidences from Barrister Jaffrey about Dr Aafia’s alleged arrest in Karachi in 2002 and refer it to her lawyers in the US where she was facing a trial at that time.

Pakistani Foreign Ministry to work on Aafia’s release

LAHORE (DAWN) – In response to a petition filed at the Lahore High Court, the Foreign Ministry on Monday has been directed to consult the Federal Law Ministry and make necessary efforts for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui from the U.S. courts.

After the February 3 decision of convicting Siddiqui with charges of attempting to kill Americans while detained in Afghanistan, Barrister Javed Jaffri has filed a petition at the Lahore High Court requesting the government to take practical steps to ensure her release and return to Pakistan, Dawn reported.

Barrister Javed Jaffri added that the trial judge is Jewish and therefore one could not expect justice from a ‘biased person’.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan demanded the government take concrete efforts for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who was recently indicted in the United States on terrorism charges.

He was addressing, ‘Hope of Pakistan and Role of Leadership’, a seminar organised by the Insaaf Students’ Federation (ISF) at the College of Accountancy and Finance on Saturday.

He criticised the government’s lax attitude towards Dr Aafia’s case and blamed the rulers for being slaves to the ‘dollar government’. He also criticised the government for its silence on the issue of US drone attacks.

Govt in contact with US for Aafia’s release: MalikISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik said Friday that the government was in contact with the US government for release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, adding that some progress was expected soon in this connection.

Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui, sister of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, met with Interior Adviser and apprised him of her family’s concerns about the falling health of Aafia in US custody.
