Islamabad : The residents of twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad would participate in a protest demonstration at the Aabpara Chowk here on Sunday to express solidarity with Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.
“The demonstration will be an expression of solidarity with the daughter of the country, who is detained in the US on false charges,” Jamaat-e-Islami Central Secretary General Liaquat Baloch told ‘The News’ here on Friday.
He said that the decision to hold a demonstration for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was taken in a meeting of the Jamiat Ittehad-e-Ulema held in Islamabad on Thursday.
He said that thousands of people from different walks of life, including women, would participate in the demonstration.
He called upon the masses belonging to any political party and religious group to attend the rally to express their anger against the US.
Liaquat Baloch said that the Pakistan government took a delayed decision in taking up the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui with the US government. He stated that the Pakistan embassy in Washington did not play any effective role in this connection.
The Jamaat-e-Islami workers have displayed banners at all public places and road crossings inscribed with slogans in support of release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, urging people to join the rally on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The JI leader said that Pakistan should play its role in the world as an independent and sovereign country. He criticised the role of NGOs working for the rights of women. He said that these NGOs were silent over the issue.
To a question, the JI leader said that there was no provision for any mid-term elections in the country. He said that elections could only be held after the sitting assemblies complete their terms.
