The women wing of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) staged a protest outside the Idara-e-Noor-e-Haq on Thursday for what they termed as an unjust verdict announced by the US jury regarding Dr Afia Siddiqui.
The rally was taken out from JI headquarters to Islamia College and was led by the JI women wing leader Ayesha Munawar. The protestors carried placards condemning the US court decision and demanded un-conditional release of Dr Afia Siddiqui.
Speaking to the participants, Professor Ghafoor Ahmed Naib Ameer said that after the courts unjust decision, it has been proven that the US is the largest terrorist country in the world.
He demanded the US government for the immediate release of Dr Afia Siddiqui and reminded of US claiming to have the best judicial system globally. He said that today’s decision regarding Dr. Afia has trampled its judicial system.
‘We are not shocked of the decision as it was expected but it has exposed the so-called champions of human rights and it’s allies in the war against terrorism such as the Pakistani government for keeping mum on the decision.
Demo held: Several dozens of people, including men and women organised a rally in front of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) Thursday afternoon to protest against the conviction of Pakistani scientist, Dr. Aafia Siddqui by a court in the United States.
Held under the auspices of the right-wing organisation, Pasban and Human Rights Network, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the United States and carried banners and placards that read ‘Decision of American Court Unacceptable’, ‘US Court withdraw the decision against Dr. Aafia’, etc.
The Pakistani neuroscientist, Aafia Siddiqui has been found guilty of trying to kill US military personnel and FBI agents in Afghanistan two years ago. The Pakistani scientist was found guilty on all seven charges listed in the complaint against her by a jury in a US Federal Court on Wednesday.
Dr Aafia has vehemently denied all charges against her during the trial, calling them ‘ridiculous’ and insisting that she was framed, jailed and tortured by the US agents in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Embassy in Washington also criticised the verdict and stated that they are dismayed over the unexpected verdict of the jury in Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case and the government will do all that is needed to provide justice to her as a Pakistani citizen.
