Dr Aafia Siddiqui goes on trial

As Dr Aafia Siddiqui goes on trial in a federal court in New York City her case is unknown to most Americans yet in her native cheap buy Without Prescription Ampicillin online Pakistan the frail neuroscientist, mother of three and reputed buy cheap amoxicillin al Qa’eda associate has become a cause célèbre.

Last week Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that he had been in direct buy cheap propecia communication with Pakistan’s Buy cheap Levaquin mission in the United States for buy ampicillin online the provision of all possible assistance and cooperation for her release, News International reported. He said that the government generic levitra online had also engaged lawyers to defend her in the court.

At a pre-trial hearing last week the defence team rejected the charge of shooting at viagra viagra buy cheap online sale FBI agents since there were no fingerprints Buy online Cialis or other forensic evidence buy vardenafil that she even picked up the gun, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. “We’re not saying she did it in self-defence. We’re not saying it was an accident. We’re saying buy cialis next day shipping she simply did not do it,’ defence attorney buy cheapest viagra online Linda Moreno told US District Judge Richard Berman.

In The Guardian, Decan Walsh told the story whose plausibility will be weighed in the Manhattan courtroom.

“On a hot summer morning 18 months ago a team of four Americans – two FBI agents and two army officers – rolled into Ghazni, a dusty town 50 miles south of Kabul. They had come to interview two unusual prisoners: a woman in a burka and her 11-year-old son, arrested the day before.

“Afghan police accused the mysterious pair of being suicide bombers. What interested the Americans, though, was what they were carrying: is it safe to buy cialis online notes about a ‘mass casualty attack’ in the US on targets including the Statue of Liberty and a collection of jars and bottles containing buyviagra | buy cialis overseas | buy levitra drugs ‘chemical and gel substances’.

“At the town police station the Americans cheap cytotec online were directed into a room where, unknown to them, the woman was waiting Viagra online behind a long yellow curtain. One soldier sat down, laying his M-4 rifle by his foot, next to the curtain. Moments later it twitched back.

“The woman was standing there, pointing the officer’s gun at his head. A translator lunged at her, but too late. She fired twice, shouting ‘Get the f*** out of here!’ and ‘Allahu Akbar!’ Nobody was hit. As the translator wrestled with buy viagra the woman, the second soldier drew his pistol Buy Propecia and fired, hitting her in the abdomen. She went down, still kicking and shouting that she wanted ‘to kill Americans’. Then she passed out.”

Dr Siddiqui’s trial will focus Buy Generic Viagra on the question of what happened in Ghazni in 2008, yet it was several years before then that the American-educated neuroscientist amoxil online had amoxil online become a figure of buying acomplia critical buy cheap Ampicillin online Drugstore interest to the US government.

As Walsh wrote: “In May 2004 the US attorney general, John Ashcroft, buy cialis pills listed shop zithromax her among the seven ‘most wanted’ al Qa’eda fugitives. ‘Armed and dangerous,’ he said, describing the Karachi woman as a terrorist ‘facilitator’ who was willing to use her education against America. ‘Al Qa’eda Mom’ ran the headline in the New cheap levitra York Post.

“But Siddiqui’s family and supporters tell a different Viagra discount story. Instead of plotting attacks, they say, Siddiqui spent the missing five years Tadacip at the dreaded Bagram detention centre, north of Kabul, where she suffered unspeakable horrors. Yvonne Ridley, the British journalist turned Muslim campaigner, insists cheapest propecia she is the ‘Grey Lady of Bagram’ – a ghostly female detainee who kept prisoners awake ‘with her haunting sobs and piercing screams’. In 2005 male prisoners were so agitated by her plight, she Cialis side effects in men says, that they went on hunger strike for buy Buy Flagyl ER Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed levitra buying brand viagra | buy cialis online cheap | buy levitra online six days.

“For campaigners such as Ridley, Levitra Siddiqui has become emblematic of dark American practices such as abduction, rendition and torture. ‘Aafia has iconic status in the Muslim world. People are angry with American imperialism and domination,’ she told me.

“But every major security agency of the US government – army, FBI, CIA – denies having held Brand Levitra her. Last year the US ambassador low price levitra to Islamabad, Anne Patterson, went even further. She stated viagra Cialis Cialis online online stores that Siddiqui was not in US custody ‘at Online buy Viagra any time’ prior to July 2008. Her language was unusually categoric.”

Amjad Khan, Dr Siddiqui’s ex-husband, told The Guardian she had never been to Bagram and that she had spent five years on the run yet closely monitored by Pakistan’s Inter Service Intelligence. A senior Pakistani official went one step further and online pharmacy suggested that the non-terrorism related charges she faces may indicate that at some point she may have been “flipped” by by Pakistani or American intelligence.

Writing in September 2008, Joanne Mariner, an attorney with Human Rights Watch said: levitra website “To target pharmacy levitra date, buy penicillin the whereabouts of the two youngest children – who should now be about 5 and 10 years old – are unknown. But Siddiqui’s oldest son, Ahmed, an 11-year-old with American Online buy Levitra citizenship, is in Afghan custody.

“According to an Afghan Interior Ministry official quoted in The Washington Post, Ahmed Siddiqui was held briefly by the Interior Ministry when he was arrested with his mother in July, and then he was transferred to the custody of the Afghan viagra soft National Directorate of Security (NDS), the country’s intelligence agency. The NDS is notorious for its brutal treatment of detainees.

“Under Afghan and international law, Ahmed Siddiqui is too young to be treated as a criminal suspect. Under Afghanistan’s Juvenile Code, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is 13. And according to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors the treatment of children globally, Online acomplia cheap Levitra buy a minimum age of criminal responsibility below age 12 is ‘not … internationally acceptable’.

“Human Rights Watch has online nolvadex called upon the Afghan authorities to release Ahmed Siddiqui to members of his biological family, who reside in Pakistan, or to a child welfare organisation that can provide proper care until he is reunited with his family. As Human Rights Watch has emphasised, an 11-year-old should never have been transferred to the custody of the NDS.”

Fauzia Siddiqui, Dr Siddiqui’s sister, is seeking action against the Pakistani government for not approaching the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to get Dr Siddiqui recovered and released. At a hearing buy online diflucan in Lahore High Court earlier this month, she said that two buy real viagra without prescription | buy cialis fast shipping | low price levitra of the doctor’s children were still detained with her while Ahmad, the oldest, had been brought back to Pakistan, Dawn amoxicillin buy pfizer viagra online where to buy cialis without prescription href=”http://mlmsuccessformula.com/images/”>Buy Buy elocon online Viagra reported.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported: “Last week, US District Judge Richard Berman had Siddiqui removed from the courtroom for the afternoon after she blurted out to prospective jurors, ‘I had nothing to do with 9/11.’

“She suggested Israel was behind the attacks, but insisted she’s not anti-Semitic.

“The judge later said he would give her a reprieve. He’s given her permission to exit the courtroom each afternoon for 15 minutes of prayer.

” ‘She has an open and standing invitation to be here and to behave as everybody else is expected to behave,’ he said.”?

Fighting for human rights

By Ibrahim Hewitt

Some people torture others for a living; it’s their job, and it’s wrong, very wrong. Torture has, of course, been around for as long as human Buy online Viagra beings have, buy cheap Buy Cialis online drugs or so it seems. And although today torture by the state appears to be a speciality buy amoxicillin online of the Online Viagra Shops Arab-Muslim world, most countries and communities have torture skeletons in their cupboards: the Spanish Inquisition, for example, or the Japanese during World War II, or Pol Pot in Cambodia; the French in Algeria; the CIA and their henchmen, including Israelis and Palestinians. The viagra incredible cruelty of human beings Ampicillin buy cheap Drugstore online against their fellow human beings knows no Viagra cheap acomplia for sale buy online viagra viagra | buy cialis for daily use | cheap levitra order cheap diflucan bounds, Online buy Cialis and today pharmacy generic zithromax order levitra viagra online it’s usually done in the name of “security” or defending “democracy”.

Yvonne Ridley has written about Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. This mother of three children is to be put on trial in the United States this week and has been subject to kidnap and torture in Afghanistan and Pakistan (more breeding grounds buy cialis fast shipping for torturers, it seems) buy propecia cheap from where she was kidnapped and taken to the US; it is not known what has happened to her children. In New York, she is subjected to humiliating invasive strip searches by prison guards whenever she has had visits from her lawyers or attended court for pre-trial hearings. The prosecution counsel has admitted that Dr Aafia is not a member of al-Qaida; has revealed that she has no links to any terrorist organization; has stated that there were no fingerprints on the gun she was supposed to have wrested from one of the soldiers confronting her in Afghanistan; and conceded that no bullets were recovered from the cell in which her “crime” was supposed to have been committed. Read that sentence again, please and then ask yourself, as Yvonne Ridley is asking, “Why is there even a trial?” Mental torture compounds the physical variety already inflicted. This is happening in the name of the United States of America, but are we surprised?

The US has been complicit in torture around the world, as we have seen in Iraq and the cases of “extraordinary rendition” in countries across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Does anything, even a “war on terror”, justify torture? Reading Franz Fanon’s account of his time as a psychiatrist in Algeria (The Wretched of the Earth, 1961) is horrifying; he worked with torturers and those whom they tortured. If it’s any consolation, the cheap buy online Without Prescription Ampicillin former suffered mentally for their “work”. The really disturbing thing is that those in authority know what is being done in their name, to protect their positions of power, but do nothing about it. We might get a few weasel words thrown out for public consumption but the practice still goes on, in another nolvadex online “extraordinary rendition” country if necessary.

And do you know what? There are people out there who don’t care; who won’t even bother to read about Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and those like her. She’s a Muslim; so what if she was in the wrong place at the wrong time? buy phentermine There’s no smoke without fire! Who cares about “human rights”, we must be protected! You can see the blog responses now. Even the Independent’s Howard Jacobson calls levaquin prescription it “drivel” to think that “If we lose our civil liberties… we surrender precisely what the terrorists wish to take” buy cheap amoxicillin (Civil liberties or civil protection, 16 January 2010).

There is hope, however, in unexpected quarters; in the city where Dr. Aafia faces trial, in fact: “As a scholar of the Constitution, President Obama knows… that defeating terrorism cannot trump every other value. When weighing values, respect for a certain conception of what it means to live in an open society must be placed on the scale.” So wrote Ronald Sokol in the New York Times last week, adding, “If the Buy Viagra, Buy Cialis, Buy Levitra Without Prescription response to terrorism is to target the innocent so as to get at the guilty, amoxil then the concept of an open society is significantly diminished. That was the tragedy Buy cialis online of the Bush administration.”

Torturers know that the weak spot for the unfortunate creatures in their custody is likely to be the victims’ family members; if they can get to them, or just threaten to get to them, they can “break” the target of their inhumanity. Fanon records the use of rape against Algerian women whose husbands were members of the independence movement; rape has been used as a deliberate “war tactic” in Bosnia, Darfur and many other places, so much so that in 2008 the UN Security Council declared it to be a “weapon of war”. Yvonne Ridley says that she has seen CCTV footage of a woman prisoner – not Dr Aafia – “being buy merck propecia held down by around four to five male prison warders while two female officers tear away at her clothes and then carry out full cavity searches.” This, she believes, “is tantamount to rape and had I not seen it with my own eyes, I would have thought it was filmed in a third Tadalis SX world country.” I venture to suggest that even if it had been in a “third world country” in this “war on terror” it would probably have been carried out in the name of a Western democracy “protecting its interests”.

There is a General Election looming in Britain and now is as good a time as any to get assurances from politicians seeking our votes that they and their parties will condemn torture in all buy levitra online of its vile forms no matter who is doing it or why. Our “allies Buy cheap Amoxil Online – especially in the Middle East, where “moderate Arab regimes” are adept at “breaking” their opponents in the torture chamber on behalf of their paymasters – need to get this message loud and clear. So do the Israelis, whose abuse of viagra human rights is the supreme irony given the history of the Jewish people.

As the Israelis well know – perhaps now for buy levitra reasons of political expediency rather than as a reminder of the terrible cost to humanity and human values ? Europe has had dark days viagra female when people were persecuted and killed for no other reason than that they were Jews. Without wishing to be overly-dramatic, we need to ensure that neither Muslims nor any other community Online Levitra buy are being lined up for extinction. That may be a forlorn hope, because if we examine how the media “softened up” Europe with anti-Semitic propaganda in the thirties there are striking parallels with the real Buy Wellbutrin SR Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed viagra online demonization of Muslims today. (Again, look at the irony – some of the newspapers that were helping to edge the Jews towards the gas chambers are today among the biggest supporters of Zionist Israel.) However, those who profess Online buy acomplia Cialis buy to be democrats need to proceed with great caution: according to Ronald Sokol, “there are limits as to how even non-resident aliens can be treated if the United States is to retain a commitment to the rule of law.” For “United States”, read any western democracy. The rule of law is already on the side of justice, because, Sokol reminds us, since the end of the Cialis stories Second low price levitra World War, “nations have come to accept that Viagra Jelly human rights law prohibits the use generic levitra of certain criteria as a basis for treating people differently. Among the banned criteria are race, gender, religion and national origin.”

In 2004, Lord Hoffman, one of Britain’s Law Lords, wrote, “I do not underestimate the ability of fanatical groups of terrorists to kill and destroy, but they do not threaten the life of the nation”. What we need now is a renewed commitment by the international community to uphold human rights law. Howard Jacobson may call it “drivel”, but when national and nationalistic politicians take it upon themselves to “protect” buy ampicillin us, crimes of all kinds can and do take place. International checks and balances are essential if human rights abusers – including terrorists ? are to be challenged and defeated.

The frail-looking woman appeared on a 2004 US list of people suspected of links to al Qaeda and is alleged to have married a relative of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the confessed organiser of the 9/11 attacks.

But despite being dubbed “Lady Qaeda” by parts of the US media, she has never been charged with terrorism.

The allegation is that she was detained Buy Viagra, Buy Cialis, Buy Levitra Without Prescription by Afghan propecia generic forces in the provincial town of Ghazni who found on her notes referring to a “mass casualty attack” and a list of New York landmarks including the Statue of Liberty.

When she was brought to Silagra New York custody shortly after, she was nursing a fresh bullet wound in her abdomen.

The biggest mystery about Siddiqui, say human rights groups, is her whereabouts during the five years prior to the alleged 2008 assault in the Afghan town.

Siddiqui was living in her homeland viagera of Pakistan online viagra pharmacy viagra brand when she vanished in March 2003. This was at a time of intense efforts by US-backed Pakistani amoxicillin security forces to root out al Qaeda and relatives believe she was grabbed in one of these operations.
Where she went then, nobody knows.

Some human rights activists have speculated that Siddiqui vanished Order Generic Propecia Online without Prescription into secret proscar US custody and may even have been the legendary “prisoner 650” at the Bagram base – a solitary woman inmate whom other detainees claim to have heard screaming.

The US military has denied this, saying the allegation was “unfounded.”
