Any One Remember Dr. Aafia Siddiqui?

January 3rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in News

The new year has started and celebrations were made all over the world by the rich and the influential people. A lot of new resolutions were passed with many fancy words of honor and justice and in the midst of all this, i was thinking if anyone of us remember our sister Dr. Aafia Siddiqui? I even wonder if i am doing justice to the very relationship of sister when we term her as our sister and do nothing. Even her real sister was silenced by Ministry of Interior from holding a press conference few weeks back (Source Online News) to reveal the horrible treatment meted out to a Pakistani citizen, a mother, a sister and a wife for a crime which is still not known to anyone.

Till the last published new on AFP, the US Court of Injustice aka Justice is still not sure if she is  mentally fit to stand trial? In the past several months, US medical facilities and all their doctors have failed to reach any conclusion on the mental condition of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and hence she is facing detention in a mental hospital, whose conditions we all have seen in movies (if not in real).

I was just wondering that our government was quick enough to block websites (source: Teeth Maestro & WiredPakistan) that contained the pictures of Salman Taseer and his family and termed it them an anti state material but our citizen languishing in the US jails and undergoing the worst kind of torture is not anti state! I wonder if we are left with any honor as an individual or as a nation? Are the depths of the relationships of mother and a daughter defined by the position they are holding in the government? Or is it that the worth of the life of Dr. Aafia is anything less then that of the family of our elite? If raising our voice for justice is anti-state then i think we should commit this crime and let the world know that we didn’t let our sister die in the prisons of the United States of Hypocrites. The problem with us is that we remain quiet when such injustices are done to others and only realize the result of our actions, when someday we are in the circle and made to pay for our inaction. Our media has gone silent on her case and never raised it in any forum and to me it seems that they are not getting any financial gain out of it and hence turning a blind eye towards her case. The famous GEO made an issue out of the extra marks of the daughter of Chief Justice but is dead silent on Dr. Aafia case. I am sure unless they see any material benefit, they will not even try to reclaim the daughter of the nation. The least we can do is to raise our voice against this injustice and make sure our government listens to it because without the support of our government, the US can never dare to keep her in illegal detention for such a long time.
