NEW YORK: Member Senate’s Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs Senator SM Zafar has expressed his helplessness in summoning former president Pervez Musharraf for human rights violations during his regime.

Talking to journalists in New York on Thursday, he said Musharraf was a powerful man and they were not able to summon him. In response to a question, he said that there was no need to meet Dr Aafia’s lawyers, as it was a case of human rights, not a legal dispute.

He said that the delegation met Dr Aafia on her consent and she was surprised that a Pakistani government’s delegation had come to meet her.He said that they had summoned the defence minister and minister for law to revoke unnecessary amendments of the Army Act. He also rejected the news that the Pakistan government was paying Dr Aafia’s lawyer.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the committee Senator Mushahid Hussain and Senator Talha Mehmood said that they were not mindful of the fact that who had handed over Dr Aafia Siddiqui to the US agencies — former president Musharraf or the intelligence agencies.

Sources said the delegation had also refused to meet Dr Aafia’s brother Muhammad Ahmed Siddiqui in Dallas. Dr Aafia’s brother confirmed that the delegation had not contacted him.
